  • Millions of people have been inspired by the role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, which was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson circa 1974.

Gygax, who is often referred to as "the father of the role-playing game" died today at his home in Lake Geneva, WI after suffering several years of health problems.

I'm one of many who've been impacted by the game. I started playing it in high school and continued through college. To this day D&D games I played decades ago still carry vivid memories. Playing the game can instantly brand you as a "geek", but in my eyes it will always be a brilliant and incredibly fun pastime.

In honor of Mr. Gygax I thought I would put together a playlist of songs that were inspired by, mention, or fit within the theme of Dungeons & Dragons. Some of these songs show the dramatic impact the game has had on popular culture and will continue to have for generations to come.

I may just have to dust off my D&D books and dice and start up a campaign. Anyone game?

  • Kurt Cobain would have turned 41 on February 20th if he had not shot himself. On this birth anniversary of one of rock's most influential individuals Shout! Factory released a DVD titled Kurt Cobain: About A Son that presents Cobain from a first person perspective.

The film is anchored by Kurt Cobain's own voice as pulled from over 25 hours of previously unheard interviews recorded by music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana.  These conversations are spliced together and presented with visuals from areas in Washington state where Cobain lived, worked and died. When Kurt references a particular place you are shown a video montage of the place. The imagery in the film provides a sense of looking through Cobain's eyes, as a ghost.

The documentary style is extremely effective, but the random close up shots of unknown human faces leaves you wondering if these people are actually connected to Cobain in some way, or if they just happen to be

  • The king of rock and roll has had an undeniable impact on music across almost every popular genre of today. However, with his deep Memphis roots, country music has probably been the most influenced by Elvis Presley.

Elvis grew from a shy, stuttering, bullied kid in East Tupelo, Mississippi to one of the most popular and iconic figures in American music history. Still today, over 30 years after his death, Elvis has a fanbase that is beyond rabid.

This playlist looks at many different subgenres of country music. Including traditional and contemporary country, alt country and honky tonk. But every song in the list is either about, or inspired by Elvis Presley in some way.

So forget the sequins and capes of fat Elvis -- this homage to the king is more in tune with the wholesome Elvis who loved his mama dearly.

    1. Elvis Presley Blues - Gillian Welch

    2. Boy From Tupelo - Emmylou Harris

The Hot 100 ranks singles based on both sales and airplay, so it's a good measure of the music that was the most popular for a moment in time. If you were alive in 1980 you are certainly very familiar with all of the tracks in this playlist.

As you reminisce about 1980 with the help of this playlist you may remember some of the following key news events of said year:

-Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XIV becoming the first NFL franchise to win 4 Super Bowls

-The 13th Winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid, New York -- these were the Olympic games where the US hockey team famously defeated the Soviet Union in the "Miracle On Ice"

-NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft proves the existence of Janus, one of Saturn's moons

-The United States boycotts the Summer Olympic games that were held in Moscow as a protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

  • I went through puberty and young adulthood with alternative rock music. Back in the early 80's college radio and MTV (believe it or not) helped spawn a new wave of music that was outside the mainstream. It was generally referred to as "alternative" music and eventually became massively popular when bands like U2, R.E.M. and Depeche Mode went on to become huge international acts. Today, "indie" music has taken up the label that alternative used to own. Although many would now argue that indie music has also become mainstream in many respects.

Anyway, all labels aside, I refer to this early alternative music as "Classic Alternative" and it forms the first filter for this playlist.

The tracks selected are from the good old days when "alternative rock" was a new phrase, but these are deep tracks -- meaning songs that were not popular "hits". Do you remember when Bono had a mullet? Michael Stipe had hair? MTV played music videos? Well, now's your chance to go back to those days without

  • Could you imagine a compilation like this showing up on a late night infomercial? No, me neither. But this is one of the beautiful things about this new digital world we live in. A playlist of songs by bands named after meat is not something that would have ever been created, manufactured and promoted before digital music distribution. And marketing and distributing a compilation album used to take serious money. Today it only takes a few minutes, an idea and a subscription music service.

We all know there are some weird band names out there. And this playlist falls into the "weird band name" category, but concentrates on bands who share a name with a cut of meat. While most are beef-specific, some are more generic and puzzling like the Meat Puppets.

Other meatalicious artists include T-Bone Walker, Meat Loaf, Swinging Steaks, Red Red Meat, Scotty And The Rib Tips, Acoustic Sausage, The Pork Dukes and many more. Dig in!

  • In the 1960s a young Steve Miller found some limited success with his version of psychedelic blues in the burgeoning San Francisco music scene. In 1973 he changed up his sound a good bit and started producing simpler, catchier songs that culminated in a stadium-filling, co-headlining tour with The Eagles. The Steve Miller Band had arrived on the radar of the American masses.

In 1978 he released the compilation Greatest Hits 1974 - 1978, which featured the title track from his album The Joker and the remaining tracks coming from only two other albums, Fly Like An Eagle and Book Of Dreams. This greatest hits album is ranked by the RIAA as the 33rd best selling rock album of all time with over 13 million units sold.

I know you have a copy.

Anyway, there's no denying that many of Steve Miller's songs have been deeply ingrained into the brains of millions through the decades-long heavy rotation of his music on AOR radio. So in honor of the impact these songs have had on our lives, I

  • Last weekend I took my children to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont, North Carolina to check out their incredible new orchid conservatory. My two kids, aged 2 and 4, loved it! After walking through the large glass structure we wondered through the rest of the garden which is peppered with a ton of fountains. My 2 year old is especially drawn to water and I let him explore a little more than I usually do. Well, at fountain #7 I turned my gaze to my daughter for a moment and splash! My little boy was completely under water. I pulled him out instantly and he was fine, but for a split second terror pulsed through my body.

Unfortunately for my kids, I'll probably force them to wear their life jackets on the boat until they're married. Water is dangerous, and you can find yourself in trouble in a split second.

As you will see, musicians are not immune to deadly power of water.

  • Our Album Review Playlist series takes a random group of CDs, pulls a single track from each into a playlist, and includes a mini-review for each album. Anything is game, and you'll never know what's coming next.

The Danish noise pop duo The Raveonettes have released their forth album on Fierce Panda Records and I love it. Lust, Lust Lust has been getting great reviews (although not stratospheric), but I'm an absolute sucker when it comes to big, sugary, fuzzed out, Jesus and Mary Chain styling, and this album has it in spades. The plodding, hook-filled first track, "Ally, Walk With Me" is as good a noise pop song as I've ever heard and should be enjoyed at high volume for the full expericence.

Where 2006's fine electro-pop effort Supernature turned many heads with its powerful and danceable contents, Seventh Tree switches gears and finds Goldfrapp falling back to a more atmospheric, almost folkie

  • Textile Mills have a long and varied history in America. Some of that history is not pleasant. Today, as textile mill employees are laid off due to cheap overseas labor we take a look at some of the music that speaks to the plight of the textile worker. From the days when working conditions were sub-human and unions waged war against mill owners to the plight of today's unemployed.

    1. Si Kahn — "The Aragon Mill" from the album "New Wood"
The Aragon Mill was written by Si Kahn in 1979 and refers to the closing one of the main employers in Aragon, Georgia; The Aragon Textile Mill.

    2. Pete Seeger — "Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues" from the Smithsonian Folkways compilation "American Industrial Ballads"
Winnsboro, SC is about 75 miles south of Gastonia, NC. This track comes from the Smithsonian Folkways compilation "American Industrial Ballads", which documents the unprecedented industrialization of the 19th century. The album contains songs of struggle, which emerged from the coalmines,
