  • A love of books and literature is probably one of the single most important things we can pass on to our children to help ensure their success in life. 70% of people in the shallow end of the literacy pool do not have a job or work only part time.

Having such a devastating economic strike against you is bad enough, but even worse in my mind, is not having the joy that comes from being able to learn and experience through the written word.

The statistics tell the story well:

50% of the unemployed are illiterate
13% of all 17 year olds are illiterate
44% of minority youth are illiterate

Children who do not read by the 3rd grade are more likely to:
    -Drop out of school
    -Take drugs
    -Go to prison
-The top 2% of student read 65 minutes a day
-The top 10% read 20 minutes a day
-The bottom 10% read 1/10th of a minute per day

Music can be a powerful tool to get children excited about reading. I know for example, that during my high school, heavy metal phase, I was inspired to read "Rime of the Ancient

  • Today we offer yet another compilation focused on death. But for this death-centered playlist, we decided to go with heavy metal. After all, it's the only genre that has a subgenre named in honor of the subject, Death Metal.

I've trolled the evil back alleys of Yahoo Music searching for metal songs, but not just about death, that would be too easy. This list features 17 songs that highlight some of the most metal ways to die.  From brutal mutilation, disease, crucifixion and stabbing to being impaled on stakes and even being chopped in half. These songs are not for the squeamish.

When I was younger I went through a metal phase, and although it's far from the top of my list today, I still love to wade through the metal genres looking for guitar solos and over-the-top gimmicks. How evil is so attractive to youth never ceases to amaze me. Ozzy Osbourne's bat-biting and upside down cross imagery helped sell at least 3 of his records to me when I was in high school. However, in the world

  • Response, or "answer songs" are recordings that directly refer to a previously recorded song. Sometimes they take an opposing viewpoint, sometimes they show a different perspective, and sometimes they continue the story as a sequel. This playlist contains the original songs as well as the responses or sequels to the original, whether by the same artist or a different one. The list begins with 6 tracks that surround one of the most famous song-based conversations in Rock history. It all started when Lynyrd Skynyrd responded to the Neil Young compositions "Southern Man" and "Alabama" with one of their most recognizable hits, "Sweet Home Alabama". The song makes direct references to Young's music with lines like:

Well I heard mister young sing about her
Well, I heard ole neil put her down
Well, I hope neil young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow

But this wasn't the end of the story, other artists also chimed in. In 1980, Warren Zevon urged us to "play that dead

  • kindofblue.jpgkindofblue.jpgIn the last three years I've become a bigger fan of jazz than I thought possible. I find myself turning to the genre more each month than I had previously. It used to be that I listened to jazz in an intellectual sense only. Meaning, I focused on the technical brilliance required to perform this great American art form. A few years ago I had an epiphany, and jazz started to capture my emotions as well as my brain. I am not sure what triggered it except the fact that I started listening to more jazz via subscription music services.

Having the freedom to listen without the worry of a bad purchase certainly played a large part in my "re-education". Currently, jazz makes up a paltry 3% of record sales and it still amazes me that a jazz artist who spends a lifetime mastering their craft will never see album sales anywhere close to a corporate pop star. Will subscription services turn large numbers of music fans onto jazz? Probably not, but it played a big part for me, and hopefully there

  • The following is a list of songs found in Rock Band, a music performance-based video game developed by a company named Harmonix. This list includes songs found on the game disc itself ("main setlist" and "bonus tracks") apart from the downloadable songs available for purchase on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. I own a Wii and have been having a blast with Guitar Hero III, but I think Rock Band would be even more fun since up to four can join in on the jam session. Vocals included.

The game let's the non-musically inclined (as well as those who are) experience what it's like to play in a real band by utilizing well designed peripherals that simulate playing a real instrument. It's a fantastic experience, in no small part due to how the individual instruments sound when they are played correctly or incorrectly. It takes some practice, but instead of the years of dedication required to master a real instrument, you can get up to speed in a couple days.

It feels great to hit the

  • jaguar.jpgAs regular readers might know, we dig making playlists of songs heard in television commercials. It's become big business, and a song properly placed in the right ad can be a windfall for artists in both exposure and dollars.

To date, we have published playlists of songs featured in Honda, The Gap, Nike, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi ads. This latest installment includes tracks that have provided the soundtrack for Jaguar luxury automobiles.  One of the most notable additions to this soundtrack is "Desert Rose" by Sting. Sting's manager Miles Copland (Stewart's brother) struck a deal with Jaguar. The company could use the song for free if the commercial featured Sting as a music video does. The result was a successful ad campaign for Jaguar and a hit record for Sting. The record was doing poorly before the breakthrough advert started airing. This was the first time a brand new song by a contemporary artist was exposed to the masses via a car commercial.

The company has also been using

  • Bob Marley's is a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a United Nations Peace Medal of The Third World recipient, a Jamaican Order of Merit awardee, and is a household name across the world, most notably in Africa. His music has broken down barriers of culture, and is loved by people of all ages and backgrounds.

Marley was a devout Rastafarian, which is a religion, or way of life, that accepts Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia, as Jah (the Rasta name for God incarnate). Rastafari is not a centralized religion and those who practice it believe in a concept of "Zion" that rejects modern society, or "Babylon". It is centered in Afrocentrism and considers smoking ganja (marijuana) a spiritual act. Marley's music helped spread reggae music throughout the world, but Rastafarianism is still a marginalized religion. Some devout Rastas believe reggae music to be a complete sellout to "Babylon".

The influence of Bob Marley's music is so

  • Ugliness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes "ugly". Sometime last year I asked some music blogger friends and music biz insiders to answer the following question:

"Who do you think the ugliest musician/band ever to walk the planet is and why?"

I took the responses I received and shared them with a large group of music loving friends who then voted on the submissions. After the votes were counted I put the selections in order from ugliest to least ugliest. The resulting list contains the top dozen ugliest musicians, or the real "Dirty Dozen."

Please remove all sharp objects and children from the room before viewing the pictures displayed below. Each pick contains the reason why the artist was chosen in the selector's own words.

  • There are a multitude of eponymous albums out there in the universe. That is, an album named after the band or artist who recorded it, or in other words, a self-titled album. Eponymous songs, on the other hand, are more rare. For this playlist I went further and included only eponymous hat tricks.  A "hat trick" is a sports term that comes from succeeding at something 3 times during the same game. So in music, an "eponymous hat trick" is a song that shares the same exact name with the artist who performs it, and the album on which it appears. I found 23 of these on Yahoo Music Unlimited, if you know of any others please let me know.

I must admit that this playlist may not be as listenable as it is interesting. It includes bands from all over the map. From Bad Company and Iron Maiden, to the Meat Puppets and Pennywise, to Train and New Kids On The Block. Not exactly a flowing playlist, but interesting nonetheless.

One of the more talented and respected artists in this list is the

  • Some time ago I sat down and started creating a playlist composed of classic rock songs about birds. I was about a dozen tracks into the mix; digging both the famous and obscure picks about our fine feathered friends, (Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Police, Neil Young) when… wait… what Neil Young bird song should I select?

There were too many great options to decide on a single one.

After working for an hour on the original classic rock bird song playlist, I scrapped it for a later date, and decided to concentrate on crafting a Neil Young only avian-centric playlist. I simply could not let another moment pass without bringing this into existence.

The fruits of my labor rendered this Neil Young compilation I call The Bird Album. It features 15 songs written about, inspired by, or that mention birds in the lyrics. Sure, it sounds like an odd way to put together a mixtape, but with an artist as legendary as Neil Young, it really works.

It's essentially a new Neil Young
