His entrancing beats and infectious personality were a match made in heaven for hip-hop producers who have cut his work up and spit it back out into a completely new American-born art form.

James Brown's high-powered shrieks, tightly defined horns, and downright stank-ass funkiness are bricks in the foundation upon which hip-hop was constructed. Without these, the house would not have become what it is today, if it was built at all. The list of James Brown songs that have been sampled is long indeed.

For this playlist we start with a James Brown original "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved" from his 1986 compilation In The Jungle Groove, which was voted number 330 of the top 500 greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
