The Best Songs of 1971

1971.jpg1971.jpg

In 1971, Jim Morrison was found dead in the bathtub of his Paris apartment by his girlfriend Pamela Courson. Although the official cause of death was heart failure, it is widely believed that he overdosed on a large amount of heroin that he snorted because he thought it was cocaine. He was just 27 years old.

The world also lost the great Louis Armstrong just 3 days later.

Two weeks after we lost Satchmo, the World Trade Center in New York City was completed.

In other 1971 news, Walt Disney World opened in Florida, Led Zeppelin released one of the best selling albums of all time, Led Zeppelin IV (not in this list as it is not available in YMU), Intel released the world's first microprocessor, Ray Tomlinson sent the first e-mail, the Twenty-sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution lowered the voting age to 18, and Johnny Cash wrote "The Man In Black."

As these events took place, the music in this playlist was pouring over the airwaves of America. The list includes almost 5 hours of the very best songs that were released in 1971 and are available for streaming in Yahoo Music Jukebox.

From the classic soul of Marvin Gaye to the blues of B.B. King, to the classic rock of The Rolling Stones and David Bowie, to the soft rock styling of Bread and Chicago, to the old-school country of Charlie Pride to the funk of Sly & The Family Stone.
