The Y! Music Playlist Blog

The Number One Hits of 1984

If you were in high school or college during 1984 this playlist holds a treasure trove of nostalgic bliss for you to peruse. It contains all 20 songs that made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US that year.

This was the same year that Michael Jackson's head caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi television ad, the legendary Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father, Tipper Gore founded the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) after hearing lyrics she deemed "filthy" on Prince's Purple Rain album, the first MTV video awards were broadcast and Madonna created an uproar when she rolls around on the floor suggestively in a wedding dress, Band Aid released "Do They Know It's Christmas?", Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle while driving drunk, the first Apple Macintosh went on sale, and Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen was involved in a car accident that took his arm.

So sit back, put this playlist on and reminisce about what you were doing in 1984. Music has a way of bringing the memories back in a more vivid way than anything else can. Hopefully, you didn't kill anyone, or have your head catch fire.
