Jay-Z vs. Cristal
06/15/2006 3:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Ben Gilbert - LAUNCH U.K. & Ireland
Jay-Z has claimed the head of Cristal champagne is racist and insists he will lead a boycott of the company.
The retired rap don is understood to have been left furious at comments made by the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal about hip-hop's affiliations with the brand.
In a recent issue of The Economist, Frédéric Rouzaud said he was curious about the rap community's obsession with Cristal, admitting he considered it "unwanted attention."
In response, Jay-Z said he plans to ban all Cristal products from his personal life and that of his many businesses. He explained:
"It has come to my attention that the managing director of Cristal, Frederic Rouzaud views the 'hip-hop' culture as 'unwelcome attention.' I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands, including the 40/40 Club, nor in my personal life."
Rouzaud has responded dismissively to Hova's comments, insisting: "I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."
Meanwhile, Jay-Z plays an anniversary show for his debut LP Reasonable Doubt on June 25 at New York's Radio City Music Hall, 10 years after the record was first released.
