Keith Richards Plays Surprise Solo Gig In Los Angeles

(10/30/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards made a surprise guest appearance at a Los Angeles club on Monday (October 28). The show, which took place at the 100-seat the Joint, featured Richards joining two of the Stones' backup vocalists--Bernard Fowler and Blondie Chaplin--as well as longtime Stevie Nicks guitarist Waddy Wachtel, former Tom Petty drummer Phil Jones, and bass player Rick Rosas, who played on such Neil Young hits as "Rockin' In The Free World."

Also lending support were upstart vocalist Memphis and veteran British singer Terry Reid, whose long list of performances includes having played at the reception of Stones frontman Mick Jagger's wedding to Bianca Perez Morena de Macias.

Some in the audience thought something special might happen since Fowler had been a member of a band that has played the club every Monday night for more than a year before joining the Stones for their current Licks tour. Fowler credited Wachtel with inviting Richards to join the band for the evening.

Richards--in trademark cuffs, skull ring, and other assorted silver jewelry--was clearly the life of the party along with Fowler. The guitarist took the stage with a black Gibson, later switching to Wachtel's 1970 sunburst Gibson SG. The group broke into a rendition of the blues standard "Key To The Highway," with Richards and Fowler interacting on stage. An animated Fowler grabbed Chaplin by his jacket and hugged him while the pair added vocal lines and harmonies around Richards's playing and singing.

"You know, I know some of the guys here," quipped Richards in reference to Wachtel, who was Richards's bandmate in his side project, the X-Pensive Winos, and Chaplin, who appears with Richards on the song "You Win Again" on the Hank Williams tribute album, Timeless.

As the band lit into "Jumpin' Jack Flash," Richards looked as if he was performing it for the first time, showing endless energy on stage. The intimate venue allowed a close-up view of Richards, who had various silver charms woven into his hair. Fowler pranced about the stage in his black leather jacket, singing lead on one of the song's verses. In addition to his work with the Stones, Fowler's extensive discography includes recording with Yoko Ono, as well as co-writing and co-producing Stones guitarist Ron Wood's 1992 solo album, Slide On This.

When Richards left the stage, he quipped, "Thank you very much. I've got work to do now. Bye, ladies and gentlemen."

Fowler stayed on to sing AC/DC's "Sin City" as Wachtel shredded power chords.

Richards, Fowler, and Chaplin will perform with the Rolling Stones at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday (October 31) and at the Wiltern on Sunday (November 4).
