Green Day upset Kanye West and Mariah Carey to win record of the year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" a year they won best rock album.
Green Day bested a strong field. Also nominated were Mariah Carey for "We Belong Together," Kanye West for "Gold Digger," Gwen Stefani for "Hollaback Girl" and Gorillaz featuring De La Soul for "Feel Good Inc."
Billie Joe Armstrong, accepting the award with his bandmates, acknowledged the oddity: "This record has been out two years," he said.
"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" was eligible for this year's Grammys because it was released as a single after the time period for last years awards.
Green Day was the big winner at last year's Grammys, as their politically charged punk opera "American Idiot" was named best rock album.
