Glen Campbell Says Goodbye in Style at Grammys

Glen Campbell gave a farewell performance at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, supported by the Band Perry and Blake Shelton. The country and pop singer, who had a string of hits in the 1970s, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease last year and is on a "goodbye tour."

The Band Perry, nominees for Best New Artist, opened the medley with a version of "Gentle on my Mind." Shelton then performed a verse of "Southern Nights" before introducing the man himself. Campbell got the crowd on its feet with his version of "Rhinestone Cowboy," his biggest hit. The performance had a few small snags, with Campbell fumbling a few lyrics, but the crowd gave Campbell its unwavering support, paying their respect. Paul McCartney even pumped his fist as Campbell performed.

Campbell released his final album, Ghost on the Canvas, last year. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy this year.

That is so true! It was great to hear him say Farwell in such a grand way. I am old school, and it seems as if a lot of oldtimers have the know how to do it right. Love you GLENN CAMPBELL.

I didn't see him fumbling lyrics...he ad-libbed a bit, but seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself! I admit, I cried like a baby. He represents so much of my childhood, and it saddens me to see him decline.

Yes Wendy, It saddens me also. I'll never forget how he would say, "HI I'm Glen Campell" at the begining of his TV show.

I know that he didn't write it, but he had the presenseof mind to sing it." Gentle on my mind" is a rare song.

I am close to 60. African American male also. Glen Campbell does not sing Country or Pop. Glen just sings great Music. From the Beach Boys to going solo. The man could and can still sing. Stay strong Glen. Just like a Rhinestone Cowboy. FYI I have it on my IPOD and sing it loudly and proudly.

Everything you just said is so true...he was a talent who won't ever be duplicated. So glad I got to enjoy him in his prime when he dominated radio and TV. He always made things fun with his music. Thumbs up to you!

It takes a big, big person to 'go public' with your demons and perform for the world, never knowing what might happen. A salute to a great performer and human being!

I admit I didn't really care for Glen Campbell's music in general, but what most people don't know is that he was one of the premier songwriters and guitarists in both the country and pop scenes for many years. He is simply one of the greatest guitar players I've ever seen. Well done, Glenn.

Wichita Lineman - talk about a song the evokes feelings of loneliness and longing. So simple yet so brilliant.

He didn't write it -- Jimmy Webb did -- but I agree that Glen interpreted it poignantly and beautifully.

We will be in the audience and if last night was any indication, it will be with tears in our eyes.
Thank you Glen, for your "goodbye tour".

It is a horrific disease, the unique voice will soon be stilled yet the singer will still live in a world none of us want to enter. Sing as long as you can Mr. Campbell, you were a bright and shining star in your time, I too love the Witchita Lineman, and Gentle on my mind. Won't forget your music sir, I pray you ease on Home with as little discomfort as can be. I am so glad no one pointed fingers at him and scoffed, the newbies to the music helped him along. He looked dignified and great.

It seems like all the great artist are all passing on, I guess that goes with the age. I'll miss Glen Campbell he's one of the greats.
I don't even want to hear anything about Whitney and anything associated with the bad times she had, we all have bad times. She too me was one of the greastest singers ever. I will truly miss her. R.I.P.
