Grammys honor Houston, celebrate 'fallen sister'

With an opening prayer and a moving tribute from Jennifer Hudson, the Grammy Awards played the part of impromptu memorial for Whitney Houston just a day after the six-time Grammy winner was found dead in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel room.

"We've had a death in our family," said host LL Cool J shortly after Bruce Springsteen opened the show by singing, with obvious poignancy, his new single, "We Take Care of Our Own."

Cool J led the crowd in a prayer for music's "fallen sister," as the Staples Center crowd bowed their heads. He declared the night one to "celebrate and remember," and played a clip of Houston performing "I Will Always Love You" from the 1994 Grammys.

Much later in the show, following the "in memoriam" segment, Hudson, the actress and former "American Idol" finalist, performed a tribute to the 48-year-old Houston by singing her hit ballad "I Will Always Love You." It was a tender, simple performance that encapsulated the glamour and vocal power Houston embodied.

She sang the last words of the song as: "Whitney, we love you."

Bathed in a solemn spotlight, Hudson performed in a sleek black gown, accompanied only by piano. She received a standing ovation while portraits of music luminaries who died in the past year were lit above her.

That Houston's death came so soon before the CBS broadcast meant "a full-blown tribute" wasn't possible, said Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich. He turned to Hudson on Saturday evening to hurriedly assemble a performance that Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, said was pulled together in hours of frantic phone calls.

"Musicians, by nature, improvise," said Portnow on the red carpet before the show.

There were numerous nods to Houston throughout the night, including comments from Stevie Wonder ("I just want to say to Whitney up in heaven, we all love you, Whitney Houston") and Rihanna ("Make some noise for Whitney!").

But the Grammys didn't just honor Houston. It also took time to pay tribute to soul and blues icon Etta James, singer Amy Winehouse, rap godfather Gil Scott-Heron and "Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius.

But as attendees arrived at the Grammys, Houston was on everyone's mind. She had been expected to perform at the pre-awards gala Saturday night thrown by music impresario Clive Davis.

"Whenever there's tragedy, family pulls together — and this is my family," said producer Jimmy Jam. "There's going to a little bit of everything tonight, and that's how the emotions should be."

"I'm glad we're all together to grieve together," said singer Bonnie Raitt.

For those who were particularly close to Houston, the evening was a difficult one. Just days before, on Thursday, R&B singer Kelly Price performed a duet of "Yes, Jesus Loves Me" with Houston at a pre-Grammy celebration — Houston's last performance.

"I'm here," said an emotional Price, a friend and a frequent collaborator with Houston. "She gave the genre of R&B music a gift that can never be denied."

    Heartfelt reaction swept across genres.

"Few people will ever touch the world as much as Whitney Houston," said country star Billy Ray Cyrus.

Musicians who grew up in the 1980s recognized the loss a soundtrack to their youth. R&B singer Ledisi burst into a warm, impromptu rendition of Houston's "How Will I Know" on the red carpet.

The Grammys were far from alone in honoring Houston. Reaction continued to pour in on social media. BET, MTV and VH1 ran tributes to the singer Sunday. Oprah Winfrey said she would remember Houston in a two-hour tribute Thursday on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Nowadays it's hard to tell if singers can really sing or not with all the studio help available to them. With Whitney..she needed no help at all. She sang alot of songs at periods where no music was involved..simply magical.

People can say what they want about Whitney Houston but she had an AMAZING voice! Everyone has problems and deals with the differently and unfortunately she chose drugs. But her drug use should NOT define who she was as a person. This woman won over 400 awards in her lifetime including 2 Emmy's! You have those that complain that she is being honored for doing "I Will Always Love You" when it was a remake of Dolly Parton's song but I'm sorry Whitney did a HELL OF A JOB on that song and made it much more famous than Dolly ever did/could. Trust me Dolly is not complaining because she gets something out of the deal every time that song is played. And that is not the only song that Whitney was famous for either. Whitney was a mother, a daughter, and a friend to those who knew her and if you are not in any of those categories then who are you to judge her?! There is now an 18 year old girl who has lost her mother and is going to need the support of her family to get her through this. For everyone out there saying hateful and hurtful things have a little respect for Whitney's family because in the end she was a human being who has died way before her time...would you want people to say such things about you when you are gone and cause more pain for your family?! RIP Whitney and may you finally find the peace and happiness you were so desperately searching for!

        beautiful words and sentiment.
There are many of us who grew up to Whitney and Michael and honestly care. It would be nice if people could just give us this time to mourn properly

drugs should define who she was, they took her over, she chose to stay addicted! and get off the mother, daughter, and friend, those were lost and damaged once she was an addict, cause an addict puts the drug first about family, friends, career and even god. all her religous younger years didnt seem to keep her on the straight and narrow did it? fear god didnt either did it?
if i didnt win some superficial award, then i cannot talk? you are judging her, in a far too positive life just pulling the carpet over the many yrs of addcition and arrests and rehabs.
she should have worried what people said about her why she was alive and work on her addiction. again, an addict dont care about anything else but the drug. then minimalizing a bad addiction as merely looking for peace and happiness? i think you have a better chance of finding it by not being an addict!

I think Jennifer Hudson was a really good choice to preform the tribute, she has a beautiful voice & real talent much like Whitney, they can both hold their own when it comes to their voices & they didnt have much use for way over the top voice tricks

I don't think Jennifer Hudson is even close to Whitney when it comes to singing abilities. But, I do think she did a great job for the tribute song.

I would love to see Jennifer Hudson, do a album of some of *Whitney's* big hits. Like every song that Whitney did was fantastic. Hudson did a nice job.

Great performance, I'm sure its very hard to sing when you are emotional and fighting back tears but she did it, it really got me emotional too.

What a great talent and voice we have lost! The demise of Whitney Houston can be summed up in two words--BOBBY BROWN! Ever since she got with that thug (under the guise of "keeping it real") her carrer took a nosedive. He's the one who got her hooked on drugs. I hope he's really proud of himself!!!

You can not blame him for her choice to use drugs...

It is the husbands responsibility to protect the wife. So yes, he can be blamed. By the same token, he is not the only one. Whitney did not make the best decision marrying him, and it broke my heart when I learned she had. I agreed with her family who said he would bring her down. She waited to long to get out as well. I remember her saying she wanted to marry before she was 30. And she did. Perhaps after she married, she realized she had made a mistake, but didn't want to divorce b/c she did not want to be seen as a failure. She found herself making excuses instead. How sad that she had to die so soon.

In many respects Brown was responsible. He introduced her to that lifestyle. Before that she was never into anything like that. She was squeaky clean and pure. Many women get hooked on the addictive natures of their husbands in an attempt to please them and keep them happy, which is what I think happened to Whitney. But once she got hooked, she couldn't quit. Granted IT WAS her choice to say no, but I think she DID IT to please him thinking she COULD quit anytime she wanted. So YES, I too think he is partly to blame any way you look at it.

Terrible waste of a life with drugs, iI hope her daughter remains strong and relies on friends to get through this, and not turn to the very thing that destroyed her mother to cope with the loss.

I am just a few months older that Whitney. I will always remember her on the cover of "Seventeen" magazine in 1980, and that was before I knew her as the great talent she was and always will be.....forever in our hearts.

Never have had one bad thing to say about Whitney. People are people and make their own decisions. Although Jennifer Hudson has a great voice..you can see why Whitney was so beloved. Nobody could sing like her..nobody. I believe GOD gave her that voice so billions could enjoy her angelical singing which obviously touched people throughout the PLANET. Her singing always made me go 'WOW!" Her beauty was amazing. Her pureness was idolized. Her humbleness was graceful. Of course all this was before the bad boy showed up. I will only remember Whitney for the star she was, that shined above everbody else.

She was a great but wasted (no pun intended) talent--and unfortunately, as it always goes, no one who has been sucked into the drug culture will think it could happen to them and decide to get help due to her death. I have to also say that, as enduring an icon as Diana Ross is, her comment about "having so much fun tonight" was tasteless under the circumstances.
