Jagger sizes up Obama's singing as 'courageous'

WASHINGTON (AP) — The reviews are in, and Mick Jagger sizes up President Barack Obama's singing of the blues this week as nothing short of "courageous."

The Rolling Stones frontman said Thursday the president did "very well" when bluesman Buddy Guy successfully prodded him to join in on a few lines of "Sweet Home Chicago," the blues anthem of the president's home town, during an East Room concert earlier in the week.

"I thought he was courageous, because there was some element of reluctance," Jagger said, adding that "it was a hard moment for the president to get out of."

Jagger, in a phone interview with the AP, also said he was pleased to see that first lady Michelle Obama was wearing a dress that night designed by L'Wren Scott, his longtime girlfriend, who had a front-row seat for the concert.

Jagger, 68, said he's never been invited to play at the White House before — or for any head of state — and he rated it a "surreal gig experience."

"I loved it," he said. "It was really unusual, surreal, and strange, but very enjoyable. ... I went out there and I tried to put out my best."

What's next for Jagger? He said he's on a minivacation on the East Coast with his kids, and they were heading out the door to play soccer.

But will the Stones get together this year for a 50th anniversary tour?

"I hope we certainly do something," he said. "It would be very appropriate, I think, and I look forward to doing something. But nothing is yet booked."

Jagger and other blues greats played the East Room on Tuesday as part of an "In Performance at the White House" concert that will air Monday on PBS.

When I sing, it is the people that listen that are courageous.

This is true for me also. No one in their right mind should ever ask me to sing.

What do you call presidential - get up off your dusty and do something. He is a smart Black man, eloquent and has a set of brains sitting in his skull; what do you have? You think somebody should become a robot and stand at attention and never have any break in all the stressors that go with this office? If you work, don't you get down time? What the heck do you think this man is made out of steel and nails? Give the world a break...get off the computer.

Well he has taken 11 vacations in 3 years , if he is so smart why have all his policies failed, why is he always blaming others for his failure, reading off a teleprompter words that someone wrote makes it only look like he is eloquent. The worshipping of berry's shadow days are over. Accept it, you just voted for a loser who has put this country in peril

I think its great that there is a politician who mingles with all age groups and all ethnicities. At least he has a better understanding of what is important to each group as individuals because he's open to meeting all types. He demonstrates that he knows that he may be President of the United States but he's human, just like the rest of us. Too bad the majority of politicians hide out from their constituents and only come out when its election time. And in answer to those who aren't willing to give Obama a chance to make things better in the world, to use a quote of Giselle Brady, "he can't throw the ball and catch it at the same time." Politicians need to learn how to work together instead of against each other. They'd accomplish a lot more on a whole rather than spending tax dollars and time voting against each other.

        Well said Mordra!

Mordra, thank God you cannot vote in the upcoming election. What you see is all politics pandering for votes in Nov 2012.

It's really sad that so many of the young people today are more concerned about Obama's current social life than his economic policies that affect all of us. Worse yet, these same young people vote.

Heather, tell me in 20 or 30 years from now how voting for someone based on their looks, wealth, social status has improved your life significantly and economically over the years. LOL

Jagger, like so many blind to the truth of the "Chosen One", should scrape the bits of Obuma's 4 skin he has stuck between his teeth.

Some tells me neither Mitt, Rick or Newt would have the cojones... they do okay in front of crowds of boring, rich white guys but I doubt those cardboard cutouts would be very fun in any other setting. Their wives are probably equally bored.

Saw President Obama's singing. He's good! He has such a great temperament to be the president: steady, thoughtful, humble, hard-working, smart, funny. Looking forward to another term!
