Judge denies Michael Jackson doctor bid for bail

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge refused Friday to release Michael Jackson's doctor on bail while he appeals his conviction for involuntary manslaughter in the pop star's death.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said Conrad Murray is a flight risk and would be a danger to society if he tries to practice medicine again.

The judge cited a statement by Murray during a documentary interview that he thought it was permissible to give the anesthetic propofol in a home setting. Jackson died of an overdose of the drug in June 2009 while in Murray's care.

Murray was not present at Friday's hearing.

Murray, 59, has been kept in solitary confinement in Los Angeles County jail as his appeal of his conviction winds its way through the courts.

His attorneys have said he should be released either on his own recognizance or on bail with an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet.

Murray was convicted Nov. 7. His four-year jail sentence is the highest penalty that could be imposed for the crime. Under current sentencing guidelines, he will probably serve half of that term.

If Dr. Murray had said No to Michael Jackson, he wouldn't be in the predicament that he is in now.

Good for you Judge Pastor. And if Murray's new appeal attys are reading this, the new argument that Michael was financially stressed and did it himself will not fly. They already PROVED that he couldn't have done it in the last trial-over and over and over. Maybe Dr. Murray wasn't paying attention and just sat there feeling sorry for himself.

I thought the judge did a good job & he did not let the lawyers B/S him. He went straight by the book I wish all judges were as good at their jobs as this judge(fairyland). On the other hand the Dr knew what he was doing was bad medical pratice and it was the $$$$$ & prestige (vainity) that movitated him. On these grounds he is gulity. We have drs here in my community doing similiar treatments and they are being movitated by the same ole same ole $$$$$.Looking at this from an outsiders viewpoint Micheal Jackson would have done this regardless who was his dr he just happen to ring dr Murray's bell at the sound of $150,000.00 a month. Its very likely he was also tempted by the possible fringe benifits, room & board, travel, and fame. This tour,I believe was to be be Jackson's last, and then semi retirement.I think he would have paid double that amount for the service he was seeking.
If the dr uses his head under his current situtation and get a book on the market he may possibly make much more than Michael Jackson was paying him. He would need to write as a vitcum and it would sell.Regardless which direction you look both Jackson & dr Murray are equalley guility.I'm not the judge just a bystander and this is my opinion.

I hope everyone realizes by now that Michael Jackson, no matter had talented, had some really BIG issues, none of which were created by his doctor. He chose to take drugs so he took drugs. His choice! The doctor was only doing Michael's bidding. The same with Whitney Houston. We all make our own decision, right or wrong, good or bad. We have to suffer the consequences with those decisions, not blame everyone else for our own mistakes. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN LIVES AND STOP BLAMING YOUR PROBLEMS ON EVERYONE ELSE!

Nice to read the truth - unlike all of the other morons who want to blame MJ's death on Murray.

i do blame the people who choose to get into the 'drug scene' but you should also realize that the doctor CHOSE to do Michael's bidding and he knew this was wrong .. it went against his better judgement, against the hypocratic oath and he knew the dangers involved .. he CHOSE to do Michael's bidding because of the MONEY involved .. he could have refused so he is to blame as well .. he got an extremely light sentence considering what he CHOSE to do ..

Carl I agree Micheal contributed to his death, but let me ask you this, do you think a medical profession who should recognized an addiction, continue to give in to the addict request? Doctors are suppose to help people when they are" SICK" or at least refer that person to someone who can. Both parties contributed to this tragedy. Will it satisfy you to know that Micheal payed a much higher punishment than Dr. Conrad. Drug dealers don't get rewarded or excused for giving drugs to an addict, eventually they to have to pay for the choice they made no other way around it.

He should have not applied for bail last Friday, either cancelling or delaying the hearing. What, with Houston just dying of overdose (likely), they are now going after her doctors! Do we always have to blame others??? Murray is in the forefront of everyone's mind. Lay low for a couple more months!!! I one time 'misused' a bunch of meds. I lived thru it. My dr., I could tell, was nervous about how I got that many Ativan. It was prn (as needed) use, he would give me a new rx for #60 everytime I went in. Put em altogether, I had about 80. Do I blame it on a dr???? No, I accept responsibility for my actions! Obviously, I somehow lived thru it but, look to MJ and Houston as the responsible persons!!!!!!

um Houston didn't have a doctor setting by her freakin bed when she died. there is a HUGE difference.
      • Jose 3 months ago
There is a HUGE difference! Whitney Houston was a drug addict and Michael Jackson was a drug addict AND a pedophile who gave kids "Jesus juice" before playtime. Everybody except Michael Jackson fans seem to understand that he was a pedophile.....

Shut up Jose we have already established in other comments that you are a complete idiot who only knows what tabloids say instead of researching to find out the truth. and there is a HUGE difference between being drugged up and dying in a bathtub strung out on God knows what and having a medical doctor who is supposed to be setting by your bed in case something happens when you died.

Nope, don't release him like HALEY BARBOUR done in MISSISSIPPI for convicted murderers and rapists. He's dangerous and lots of money was spent to put the man in the klink.

Wow, had it been someone else they would have gotten a 9 to 11 year sentence. And that with no priors.

Drag Dr. Monkey behind a truck down a gravel road then into a field of sand burrs, then pour salt water on him..let him rest a few minutes...then start over again...

What kind of doctor thinks it is permissible to give an anesthetic in a home setting? This drug is supposed to be given in a hospital or clinic. I'm not sure if he deserves to be sitting in jail....

Do they not put criminals in prison in Calif.? Its always the L.A.County Jail...I am suprised he is still in there given they are always so overcrowded and release the rich and well knowns like a revolving door..Maybe the jail would not be so crowded if they would just send the criminals who have had their trials on to a prison where they belong..Thats where everyone else serves their time, even while appealing..Why is Murray so different? He's a murderer..
