Calling her lengthy letter to fans on Facebook her "'diva in distress' thesis," Mariah Carey has apologized for posting an unfinished version of her latest single, "The Art of Letting Go." She also posted the "real mix" of the song.
"There's no doubt in my mind that this sounds like a self-absorbed diva on a 'woe-is-me' tangent about a couple of adlibs or some other triviality," she wrote, "but the reality is this is me, focusing solely on the record, wanting you to hear it and experience it the right way."
In the note, which she wrote at 3:30 in the morning, "sitting on my bathroom floor, very upset," she explained that when she held an online listening party for the track – the title track of her upcoming album, her 14th – she was unaware that the wrong version had been posted. "A mistake was made by a brand new sound engineer, whose only task was to press the space bar and upload the song to Facebook," she wrote. When it was posted, she did not listen to the version on Facebook but chose to play the "properly mixed and mastered" version of the song on her iPod.
"I am involved with every record I make, from the inception to the completion of the song," she wrote. "Every nuance of the beat or vocal matters to me. Even if the differences may seem slight to you, I had put time, effort and emotions into 'The Art of Letting Go' and the real mix is how I intended for you to hear the song."
She decided to leave the "old version" of the song online and encouraged fans to share comments with her about the differences in the mixes. "I typically don't respond to things like this or go into so much detail to the world," she wrote, "but this is something I'm upset about and I wish I would have known sooner" that the wrong version was posted.
"The Art of Letting Go" is the second single Carey has released so far this year. In May, she put out "#Beautiful," featuring Miguel. The album The Art of Letting Go was originally slated to come out in March, but the release date has been pushed back several times since then. Currently, there is no firm release date for the record.Mariah Carey Apologizes for Posting Wrong Mix of New Single
