Food and music have been intertwined for ages, so it makes sense that on the web series Culinary Beats, famous musicians are paired with famous chefs to learn each others' crafts. The first episode matches Passion Pit with chef Nick Anderer (of the swanky New York Italian restaurant Maialino).
In this clip from the first episode, Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos takes a spot at a piano, surrounded by Maialino's wines. He then plays a radically reworked version of "Sleepyhead," originally on Passion Pit's debut LP, Manners. While the original was drenched in samples and synths, the live-in-restaurant version finds Angelakos singing in a near-whisper while gentle piano chords drift underneath. The sparse setup allows for specific focus on Angelakos' voice, which impressively shifts between falsetto and his natural lower register.
