Shakira Holds Baby Shower for Charity

Shakira and soccer star boyfriend Gerard Piqué are throwing a virtual baby shower to celebrate the impending birth of their first child by asking fans to donate life-saving supplies including vaccines and mosquito nets to children living in some of the world's poorest communities, Reuters reports.

Dubbed the "Inspired Gifts" program, the couple set up a "virtual living room" through Unicef – Shakira is an ambassador for the charity – where users can donate and purchase items such as a mosquito net for $5, polio vaccinations for 17 children for $10 or, for $110, a peanut-based food paste that can save an acutely malnourished child.

"To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations," the couple said.

Shakira and Barcelona center-back Piqué announced the pregnancy last September, though the singer hasn't announced a due date. Shakira is also reportedly working on a new studio record and will join Usher as one of two substitute coaches on the upcoming season of The Voice.
