Bandsintown, a concert listing service used by 45 million unique viewers a month, has integrated Sony's Music Unlimited subscription service into its apps.
The deal, announced by the two companies today (Jan. 17), gives Bandsintown users the ability to preview music by artists whose concerts are listed in its app. Bandsintown lists about 175,000 upcoming concerts at any given time. Though not all concert listings will have playable music through Sony, given the number of baby bands listed on the app, the major acts will most likely be represented within Sony's catalog of 25 million tracks.
Bandsintown's service sends about 3 million music fans a month to ticketing sites such as Ticketfly, Eventbrite and Ticketmaster. Sony's hope is that it will send as many new customers to its on-demand music streaming service.
After a 30-day free trial, Bandsintown users can continue to get 30-second song previews for free, or pay $9.99 a month for access to Sony's premium service on all devices, or $4.99 a month to listen on computers.
Both Sony and Bandsintown compete in crowded spaces. The newest entrant in the music streaming market will soon be Beats Music, which is set to launch Jan. 21, and join half a dozen existing on-demand subscription services including Sony, Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, Slacker and Xbox Music. Bandsintown, which is among the earliest services, competes with Songkick, WillCall, Timbre, Bandmate, Setlist.fm and GigBeat.
The partnership between Sony and Bandsintown is the latest example of continuing integrations between digital companies that play in recorded and live music services in an effort to make their products more well rounded, giving browsers reasons to stay within their apps rather than click elsewhere to get what they need.
