Sugarland devastated by fair collapse comments

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Country duo Sugarland says it is devastated that people "want to point fingers and try to sensationalize" an Aug. 13 stage collapse that killed seven people and injured 58 before the band's show at the Indiana State Fair.

The band issued a statement to The Associated Press on Tuesday after its attorneys responded to a lawsuit by saying that injuries to fans were at least partly "their own fault."

Sugarland manager Gail Gellman said fans are "the single most important thing" to the duo.

The collapse occurred when high winds toppled rigging holding lighting and other equipment. The band's attorneys call the winds an "act of God" and say fair officials and Mid-America Sound Corp. were responsible for the stage setup.

Welcome to America and particularly pop culture. They love you right up until they see they can profit off of you. People actually are suing Captain Sullenberger after he glided a powerless plane on to the Hudson. Lawyers are killing this nation.

Really if you live in Indiana, you should know the weather by now and what it can do, It can turn deadly in a heartbeat, To say that Sugarland is responsible is insane. You take your chances by going to an outdoor event like this. Check the weather first, if it looks like it's going to get nasty, swallow your losses and stay home. Better safe than sorry

You CANNOT blame the "performers" for an "Act of God"! They do NOT 'own' the venue, they were simply contracted to perform at a certain time -for a certain length of time. They CANNOT, possibly, be 'held accountable' for a storm that moved in that the stage and rigging could not handle. They had NOTHING to do with that aspect. They are just lucky that they, too, were not victims of that incident. GREEDY bustards are after them because they have "deep pockets"! SHAMEFUL !!

What is shameful is what they teach in law school. Find someone with deep pockets and they find a way to pin whatever has happened on them.

I'm sorry, did the two members of Sugarland personally install all of the stage lighting and equipment? No? Okay then. They certainly didn't make the stage collapse. It could've been a freak tornado and the group would still be blamed. I'm sorry people died, but there's always a safety risk every day, every where. It's no different than the people who were killed at the Nevada air show when the pilot lost control of the plane and it crashed into the stands. It was a freak accident. Yes the families should be compensated, somehow. But to personally blame Sugarland is just stupid.

Sugarland had nothing to do with the assembly of the stage. I feel bad for those injured, and for the families of those who died, but they are cheapening their grief by the ridiculous claim that Sugarland is in any way responsible for the stage collapse. It's looking more and more like it's about the money now, and not the loss of life.

Um...was there an actual article that I just missed somewhere, or was that actually JUST a headline?

personal responsibility is nonexistent. Check the weather and judge for yourself if it’s safe to stay in weather like that. People didn’t want to give up their seats, they took a risk and lost. Sorry for the loss of life but never allow someone else to tell you a situation is safe when money and a schedule are involved.

People always have to blame somebody. I wish Sugarland the best, I am not a country music fan but I do like them.

I could see if they put the stage up themselves that it would be their fault. Lets be realistic here whoever put it up is responsible. Blame the persons that built it not the ones that were gonna use it!

I can not see how it would be sugar lands fault for the lighting & sound to be at blame they were their to do a show not to set up the stage for the show, I am sorry for the people who lost loved one that night. It in away is trying to make people feel guilty for what maybe God did that night, we can not control what he does can we, Ask your self that question!

Sugarland had a sugar pit, an area with general admission seating. Meaning, you didn't have assigned seating: you move, you lose your spot. Because of the Sugar Pit, even if the dead had left, there would have been other bodies to take their place. God had nothing to do with failure on multiple leaves of the venue, company that constructed the stage, concert goers and, yes, the performer's company to protect lives.

Well then they need to fire their attorney if they really feel like that. Why haven't they done that yet?

the media has an agenda about Sugarland?=chaos in the minds of people by writng this crap ===am i supposed to blame a store in joplin on may 23 2011 for tornado deaths ---a student of mine his mother is killed going to get pizza for their party =is it the pizza places fault or an "act of god" .....for such wonderful caring people that sugarland is ..it is terrible 4them to get any wrath for this because they are nice people i personally know them ........ I THINK WHAT WE ARE SEEING HERE IS THE DEMONIC ESTABLISHMENT MEDIA TRYING TO HARM PEOPLE WHO ARE INHERENTLY GOOD FOLKS.........can you understand what i just said ???? these workers of greed will stop at nothing -they will even just make it up as they go along ==theatre of the absurd for the sheeple masses to gossip ....if anyone is responsible here its the people who frikin ran the fair and sold tickets .....

Sugarland got paid $200,000 by Tuscaloosa AL even though they didn't play. They weren't good enough to take the money at that time when personnel was oout responding to tornado damage. Nice people, yeah, right.

Have you seen the guys that work at Fair Grounds??? After I reach about 15..I never went back to ride anything at a fair again. And Im sure they had a helping hand on erecting the stage for the show

If it's an act of God, why didn't the lawyers sue God or his self proclaimed representatives on Earth?

I was going to read this article, but at the top there was an ad for Bill Maher. Can't stand him, so I passed.

If you design something, construct something, and it falls on people, it's your stupidity, not the fault of the fans, the wind, or God.
    • Max Fubar  •  3 months ago
Simple, whose equipment was it and who set it up? The other end is, was it expected to be windy or not that day. If not, it'an act of God, if it was, then it was negligence by the provider of service, IE: Lighting/stage people who set things up.
