McCartney has rarely been seen or heard using it himself, although legend has it that this was his character’s name in his screenplay version of the Give My Regards to Broad Street movie. The nickname wasn’t peculiar to him: It used to be common for Europeans whose surname begins with “Mc-.” But now it’s indelibly associated with McCartney. It made for a good play on words when the English press began referring to Heather McCartney as “Lady Macca”… which was seen as an allusion to Lady MacBeth. We know the media were not the first to use it on Paul, because on the Anthology outtake version of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” from 1965, John Lennon can be heard saying, “Oh, are you ready, Macca?”
