1977
Shakira Mebarak (full name: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) was born February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, into a poor family.
1985
Shakira wrote her first song at age eight.
1990
Shakira signed her first recording contract with Sony Music Colombia at the age of 13.
1991
Her debut album, Magia (Magic) was released in 1991 when she was barely a teenager.
1994
Shakira joined the cast of the Colombian soap opera El Oasis in 1994.
1995
Shakira releases her first international release, Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet). The album hit number one in eight different countries and eventually went platinum in the U.S. as well.
1997
Shakira finally left the soap opera, El Oasis.
1998
Shakira signed Emilio Estefan -- Gloria's husband and a highly successful music-biz insider -- as her manager and producer.
2000
At the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards, Shakira took home trophies for Best Female Pop Vocal ("Ojos Así") and Best Female Rock Vocal ("Octavo Dia").
2001
Shakira dyed her long brown hair blonde and went to work on her first (mostly) English-language album, Laundry Service.
2001
Laundry Service sells over 13 million albums worldwide.
2005
The release of two albums in two different languages. Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 is the Spanish language release and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 is the English.
Additionally
-Some of her favorite bands are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Police, the Cure, and Nirvana.
-Shakira dedicates as much time as possible to her Foundation Pies Descalzos, which promotes education and relieves some of the basic needs among children displaced by violence in Colombia and has become a goodwill ambassador for Unicef.
-Shakira became an animated mini-pop for Yahoo! Music.
