(1/13/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- No one was more surprised than the members of Tonic when it was learned that the Modern Rock band had notched two Grammy nominations for the 45th annual Grammy Awards. The band was recognized for best rock album for its latest effort Head On Straight and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal for "Take Me As I Am."
When bassist Dan Lavery heard the news, he told LAUNCH he thought it was a joke. "To get two I just was certain somebody was kidding with us," Lavery said. "So I can't say one is more important than the other. I definitely think that best rock album is an amazing category to be considered in. I'm extremely proud of that. I don't know what else to say about that. It's so unbelievable. What's even funnier is if you have friends who, after a couple of drinks, they're starting to tell you, 'You guys could win.' (laughs) And then you go, 'Come on man, Bruce Springsteen? Shut up!' (laughs)."
For best rock album, Tonic's Head On Straight is up against Bruce Springsteen's The Rising, Robert Plant's Dreamland, Sheryl Crow's C'mon C'mon, and Elvis Costello's When I Was Cruel.
For best rock performance by a duo or group with vocal, Tonic's "Take Me As I Am" is up against Aerosmith's "Girls Of Summer," Coldplay's "In My Place," Creed's "My Sacrifice," Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott's "Hero," 3 Doors Down's "When I'm Gone," and U2's "Walk On."
The 45th Annual Grammy Awards will be held February 23 at New York City's Madison Square Garden. It will be televised via CBS-TV from between 8 and 11:30 pm ET/PT.
