(12/24/99, 10 a.m. ET) - Blues Traveler frontman John Popper helped make one of the final shows ever by fellow blues-jam band God Street Wine into something a little more special when he appeared unannounced during that band's gig at New York's Wetlands on Wednesday night (Dec. 22). The harmonica maestro joined God Street Wine for a spirited version of their tune "Diana," much to the delight of both the band and the "Winos," as the group's fans are known. "It was about as good as it gets," said God Street bassist Dan Pifer. God Street -- which emerged at around the same time as Blues Traveler and the like-minded Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, and Phish -- announced recently that their three-night stand at the Wetlands this week would be their last as a group. The band released five albums in the '90s, including their self-titled Mercury Records debut in 1997, their last studio effort. As for Popper and Blues Traveler, the band is looking to begin anew in 2000 with new bassist Tad Kinchla, the younger brother of BT band guitarist Chad Kinchla, who joined the group after the accidental overdose death of original member Bobby Sheehan earlier this year (LAUNCH, 11/18). -- Neal Weiss, Los Angeles Got news tips, comments, or questions?
