Blues Traveler Returns On 'Bridge' With New Bassist

(5/8/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Blues Traveler releases Bridge, its first album since the death of original bass player Bobby Sheehan, today (May 8). The band recruited Tad Kinchla, the brother of Blues Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla, to play bass, at the suggestion of the band's management, since Chan wanted to remain unbiased.

LAUNCH asked Tad about stepping into the void left by Sheehan's passing. "In terms of filling the void, I'm a different player, so it's a different thing, and I definitely on stage have moments where I miss the old sound because I'm a fan," he said. "I'd like to hear that, but I'm also getting more comfortable feeling like this is, I'm part of this new band. It's working out. I think we're different players so there can't be a comparison, one better than the other or any way like that. It's just different, you know."

Bobby Sheehan died on August 30, 1999 at his New Orleans home due to an accidental drug overdose.

Blues Traveler will promote Bridge today (May 5) by taping an episode of Late Night With David Letterman, playing a special show at New York City's Supper Club, and then heading down to CBGB's after that for a 1 a.m. jam session. Chan Kinchla joked, "As we only have one day to release a record we thought the best place to release it would be back in our old home of New York. And being that we only have one day in New York, we wanted to see as much of the city as we could."

The first single from Bridge is "Girl Inside My Head." The band is in the midst of a radio festival tour, the latest being Atlanta's Music Midtown festival, where they opened the set with a cover of the Charlie Daniels Band classic "The Devil Went Down To Georgia."
