Type O Negative Owns Top Rock Album Debut, Metallica And Radiohead Drop One Spot

(6/26/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Type O Negative's latest album, Life Is Killing Me, is the top rock debut on this week's Billboard 200 album chart. The album comes in at Number 39 on the chart. The only other debut album that sold more than Life Is Killing Me in its first week was Monica's new effort, After The Storm, which debuted at Number One on the chart.
Metallica's St. Anger is the highest charting rock album this week, and it drops from Number Two to Number Three. Radiohead's Hail To The Thief is right behind, dropping from Number Three to Number Four.
Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele told LAUNCH that with the band's other semi-successful albums--Bloody Kisses and October Rust--they took a lot for granted. Steele views Life Is Killing Me as a vehicle to get their career back on track.
"We took a lot for granted," Steele says. "I think we were riding the horse and we thought we didn't have to work as hard. That was sincerely a mistake. We/I made a mistake."
Type O Negative is helping themselves and the record company out this year by touring, a rarity for the band. They're currently on the road in Europe and will embark on a 12-plus date tour of the North America. West Coast dates haven't been announced yet. Type O Kicks off the North American leg July 25th in Worcester, Massachusetts.
1993's Bloody Kisses featured the Halloween-tinged hit, "Black No. 1," and the heavy goth-tinged track "Christian Woman." 1996's October Rust was a sonically lush album featuring a more electronic/techno vibe. The band released the album World Coming Down in 1999.
