The Clash's Mick Jones Worried About Friend In Iraq

(3/12/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- The Clash was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on Monday night (March 10th) at New York City's Waldorf Astoria, but the band's Mick Jones had other thoughts on his mind besides the honor. In his speech at the podium he mentioned that one of his friends was in Iraq being used as a "human shield."

Backstage in the pressroom after the band's induction, Jones mentioned that his friend is currently in Baghdad, and could potentially be in the line of fire. "We had two convoys that left from London to Baghdad," Jones said. "The first one went by bus, but he missed it. And so he took the flight to Amman and then to the bus from there to Baghdad. He's there now."

The Clash weren't the only ones with war on their minds at the induction ceremonies. Neil Young voiced his opposition to war while inducting Mo Austin.

Other acts inducted this year included the Police, AC/DC, and Elvis Costello.
