(3/1/99, 1 a.m. PST) - When industrial rock veterans KMFDM announced their demise earlier this year (LAUNCH, 1/22), fans hoped it wasn't true, while skeptics dismissed it as a publicity stunt. The fans and skeptics appear to be right on the money as KMFDM members Sascha Konietzko and Tim Skold have announced plans to re-emerge as MDFMK--that's KMFDM backwards, for those not suffering for dyslexia.

The band's announcement is about as mysterious as Konietzko's proclamation that "KMFDM is dead." The only details we know about the new combo is that it is signed to Republic/Universal, and it threatens/ promises that "the future of music must not belong to the mediocre!"--a message that was included in a press release announcing the new band on its website, www.mdfmk.net.

Meanwhile, Konietzko and Skold's previous label, TVT/ Wax Trax, is still planning to release Adios, which is being billed as the final KMFDM album, on April 13.

The announcement of the formation of MDFMK, or at least the renaming of KMFDM, comes on March 1, the day that the Seattle-based Konietzko promised to end his media blackout that began after he announced the end of KMFDM. It also marks the group's 15th anniversary.

We don't know exactly why the combo decided to invert its name, but it was not to get out of its contract, as Prince attempted to do by changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol during his battle with Warner Bros. A spokesperson for TVT/ Wax Trax confirmed that the band fulfills its contractual obligation to the label with the release of Adios.
