Styx Guitarist Says Super Bowl Is Anybody's Game

(1/24/03, 3 p.m. ET) -- Styx is preparing to perform at Super Bowl XXXVII on Sunday (January 26) in San Diego, the second time in three years the group has played the event. So who does the band think will win the contest between the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Singer-guitarist James "J.Y." Young said this game is up for grabs. "I think more than ever, it, to me, it appears to be anybody's game," Young said. "It was clear to me two years ago, that I correctly picked Baltimore way in advance on that one--(but) a month ago, I predicted the Tennessee Titans were gonna win it all, but...."
Styx is slated to play a rendition of Queen's "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" prior to the player introductions before the game, and at least part of the performance should be televised. Young said that the band hopes the Super Bowl experience this year is as pleasurable as it was in 2001. "We did it two years ago and we were on the field, not televised, but had a blast," Young said. "Did an edited version of 'Come Sail Away,' and they blew off all these flash pots and it was at Tampa Stadium, so the Buccaneers...The guns were blasting at the end of the whole thing and whatever, and it was a blast. Got to see the game, and met a couple of former NFL stars that are big Styx fans there, and it's, it was a great thing."
Santana and Bonnie Raitt are also part of the Super Bowl pregame show, with Shania Twain and No Doubt playing at halftime. The Dixie Chicks will sing the national anthem, while Celine Dion will deliver "God Bless America."
Styx releases its new album, Cyclorama, on February 18. The first single, "Waiting For Our Time," came out earlier this week.
