Ben Folds To Go It Alone On Next Tour

(2/11/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- After years on the road with his former trio Ben Folds Five and touring much of last year with his own backing band, Ben Folds will embark upon his first-ever solo tour later this month.
The trek, aptly titled Ben Folds And A Piano, will kick off February 25 on the campus of the University Of Iowa in Iowa City and include 17 shows overall, culminating in a two-night stand at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles.
"I actually have more room to throw shit into the piano and make it something completely different every night," says Folds, of playing solo. "It's all about talking to the audience and fulfilling requests and making a night out of it."
Regardless of the arrangements, Folds tells LAUNCH that songs are still the best way to tell a story. "I love what a three-and-a-half-minute song can do. It's amazing to me that someone can write--and I don't claim to be one of the people that has ever done it--but someone can write a song that encapsulates someone's life in three-and-a-half-minutes. Like 'Imagine' by John Lennon or something. It’s more important than 95 percent of the novels out there that take years to write and are 200 pages, and that blows my mind."
Folds is touring in support of his first solo album, Rockin' The Suburbs, which arrived last fall from Epic Records. It features the single, "Still Fighting It." He can also be found on the soundtrack to I Am Sam, covering the Beatles ' "Golden Slumbers."
