Tracy Byrd Asks Garth Brooks Not To Take 'Ten Rounds'
10/17/2002 6:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Mark Armstrong
(10/17/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Tracy Byrd had just recorded his latest chart topper, "Ten Rounds Of Jose Cuervo" and was planning to title his album after it, when he learned that Garth Brooks had recorded it and was thinking about including it on his Scarecrow project. This was not good news to the singer, who didn't want his version overshadowed by Brooks's. So, Byrd picked up the phone.
Byrd recalled the conversation. "I called Garth and he said that he had been told if it wasn't my first single, it was not gonna be a single and I said, 'Well, it's gonna be a single and I really, really am counting on this thing as a hit.' I said, 'I named the album after it.' And he was cool he said, 'Man, I wish you luck with it,' he said, 'Do well, you had it first and I love the song, I think it's a smash and good luck with it.'"
Brooks was right on target, as the song did become a smash for Byrd, giving the singer his first Number One song in seven years.
Byrd celebrated the song's chart-topping success with its writers, Casey Bernbard, Michael Heeney, and Marla Cannon-Goodman, at a Mexican restaurant in Nashville on Wednesday afternoon (October 16).
