(8/26/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Jay-Z was among those paying tribute to Aaliyah on the first anniversary of her death.
During his headline set at the Sprite Liquid Mix tour stop Sunday (August 25) at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan, Jay-Z halted his performance of "Hard Knock Life," asked his crew to dim the stage lights and the fans to hold up lighters as Aaliyah's "Try Again" played over the speakers. "We love you. We miss y'all," Jay-Z said after the tribute, referencing not only the 22-year-old singer and actress but also the eight others killed in the 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas.
Aaliyah was raised in Detroit, and began her career while living in the city. At the time of her death, she was seeing Damon Dash, co-CEO of Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Enterprises.
