Lauryn Hill, Dennis Hopper, Salma Hayek Turn Out For Benefit

(3/21/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Lauryn Hill performed a one-hour set at midnight with just an acoustic guitar and microphone at the People And Places With No Name benefit Tuesday (March 19) at the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles.

During the intimate show that included songs from her Unplugged album due out on April 30 on Columbia Records, onlookers sat on the floor and listened. Kenna, the Neptunes protege and first act on Fred Durst's Flawless Records, discussed his excitement to see Hill. "I think she's reaching some spiritual levels right now, and I'm sure that she'll be coming with whatever it is that's in her heart," he told LAUNCH. "And that's the best thing for Lauryn Hill because that's what she gave us in the first place."

In addition to performances from Hill, Burham Ocal, and Mia Maestro, the gala event spearheaded by Michael Comte in conjunction with the Red Cross and the International Committee Of The Red Cross included an art and jewelry auction that raised more than $500,000 to benefit victims in Afghanistan, and the forgotten conflicts in Ethiopia and Angola.

Comedienne Aisha Tyler, host for Talk Soup and the Fifth Wheel, said she was in favor of the organizers' support of Afghanistan. "I think what we're doing is kinda protecting our personal safety, but we're also affecting the lives of women and children and innocent people, and Afghanistan people had nothing to do with the attacks," she told LAUNCH. "I think we have a responsibility to clean up our mess and to show the people of Afghanistan and any country that we are engaged in any type of military action with [the intent] that we are about protecting ourselves and not about hurting them."

Other notables who attended the event included Geraldine Chaplin, Uma Thurman, Darryl Hannah, Dennis Hopper, Bryan Adams, Macy Gray, Oliver Hudson, Melissa Joan Hart, Eriq Lasalle, Alek Wek, Jena Malone, Billy Zane, China Chow, Lisa Marie, Patricia Arquette, Salma Hayek, Chloe Sevigny, and Brad Rowe, among others.
