Hill, Parton, Dixie Chicks, Lonestar Respond To Grammy Nods

(1/8/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Faith Hill was among the five nominees for best female country vocal performance for "Cry," the title track of her multiplatinum-selling new album.

"I'm very proud and honored to be nominated for best female country vocal performance," said Hill. "It is tremendously exciting to have your music recognized by your peers." Hill faces competition from Martina McBride ("Blessed"), Lucinda Williams ("Lately"), Lee Ann Womack ("Something Worth Leaving Behind"), and Dolly Parton ("Dagger Through The Heart").

Parton was also recognized in the category of best country album for Halos & Horns. "It's always wonderful and a great compliment to be nominated for any Grammy award, but Halos & Horns is very special and dear to my heart, so it made it twice as special. 'Dagger Through The Heart' is one of my favorite songs on the whole album, so I was thrilled about that as well."

The Dixie Chicks' latest effort, Home, was also nominated in the best country album category, as well as the album's debut single, "Long Time Gone," which was nominated for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal. "We are particularly proud that this project is nominated, as it was recorded at home in Texas and is the first time we co-produced with Natalie's father Lloyd Maines," the Dixie Chicks said via a statement. "Being in the overall album category with such a diverse mix of artists is the biggest thrill."

Diamond Rio received a nomination for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal for its chart-topping poignant hit, "Beautiful Mess."

"If we are counting correctly, this will make 12 Grammy nods," said group member Dana Williams. "I think it's time to bring one home!"

Lonestar also garnered a nomination in the same category (best country performance by a duo or group with vocal) for "Not A Day Goes By." The group issued a collective comment: "It's always gratifying to be recognized by your peers. A Grammy nomination means so much to us, as does being recognized in the company of so much other talent."

The category is rounded out by the Dixie Chicks ("Long Time Gone"), Trick Pony ("Just What I Do") and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for the recording of "Roll The Stone Away," featured on their Will The Circle Be UnBroken Vol. III album.

"We make these records because we're fans of music," said Nitty Gritty Dirt Band guitarist/vocalist Jeff Hanna. "We like to get into the music, where it comes from, how it connects, and truthfully, we have so much fun in the studio with all of our heroes. When we did the first one, we were scared, we were honored, we couldn't believe it. It's like that now, only different, and while we don't ever do these things for Grammy nominations, it's nice to see that other people will respond to the same things in music that we do."

Lee Ann Womack garnered two Grammy nods: best female country performance for "Something Worth Leaving Behind," and best country collaboration with vocals for "Mendocino County Line," a duet with Willie Nelson featured on Nelson's Great Divide album.

"Two Grammy nominations--wow!" said Womack. "The fact that I am privileged enough to share a nomination with Willie Nelson is a huge thrill."

The 45th annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 23. The event will air live on CBS from 8-11 p.m. ET.
