Paula Cole Says 'Amen' To Less Pressure

(10/18/99, 3 p.m. PDT) - Paula Cole, who recently released a new album, Amen, tells us that she was far more at ease in the studio making her latest album than she was when making her 1996 breakthrough album, This Fire. "I feel the pressure more now that I've made the record than between albums or while making," Cole tells LAUNCH. "I had the songs. Then once I had the songs, I could allow my creative headspace as producer to then fill out the songs. But I didn't feel so much pressure--in fact I felt more trust. The record company didn't set foot in the studio. Last album, I had to make it in two weeks on half a budget--a lot of pressure. This album, there was much more of an atmosphere of trust, which I feel is a much more creative place in which to work, and as a producer I've witnessed that over and over and over. In an atmosphere of trust you get better performances." Cole is heading to Europe soon to do some press around Amen's release there. Aside from an appearance at the Dawson's Creek concert in Wilmington, Va., on Nov. 13, her sole live date here in the U.S. takes place Wednesday (Oct. 20) in Los Angeles at the club Vynyl.
