CMA Awards Toast 'Strawberry Wine'

09/25/1997 3:00 AM, Yahoo! Music
Lyndsey Parker

(9/25/97) - The 31st Annual Country Music Association Awards were handed out at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry last night, and Garth Brooks was the top honoree, taking home his third Entertainer Of The Year statuette (he also won in '91 and '92). The other major success story of the evening was Deana Carter's "Strawberry Wine," which won for Single Of The Year and Song Of The Year. Despite earlier criticism that females had been snubbed by the CMA by not being nominated for the Entertainer Of The Year category, women did pretty well this year: Besides Carter's sweep, teen idol LeAnn Rimes won the Horizon Award (for career progress), Kathy Mattea won Best Video for "455 Rocket," long-overdue nominee Trisha Yearwood finally won for Female Vocalist Of The Year, and Brenda Lee was inducted into the CMA Hall Of Fame. Matraca Berg, who co-wrote "Strawberry Wine," also got a chance to shine by performing her own crowd-pleasing ballad, "Back When We Were Beautiful. " Other big winners from the testosterone set were George Strait (who won Male Vocalist Of The Year for the second time, as well as Album Of The Year for Carrying Your Love With Me), Diamond Rio (Vocal Group Of The Year) and Brooks & Dunn (Vocal Duo Of The Year).
