Men In Black (Lawyers) Go After Will Smith

(8/26/97) - In yet another story in a looong line of lawsuit newsbytes previously covered in LAUNCH Online, now rap/TV/movie superstar Will "Fresh Prince" Smith is being sued for libel by his original record promoter, Dana Goodman. The lawsuit centers on an Us Magazine article in which Smith stated that his early Philadelphia record promoter had forced him and then-partner DJ Jazzy Jeff to sign a contract by placing a gun on the dashboard of a car, and that the promoter fired shots at the duo "every time he saw us." Smith never referred to this promoter by name, yet Goodman is suing anyway, claiming that anyone familiar with the Philly rap scene would know who Smith was talking about.
