And The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees Are...

(9/20/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - The official ballots are out in the mail for the Performer category of the next class of Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees. This year's short list includes Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Solomon Burke, Eric Clapton, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Flamingos, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Moonglows, the O'Jays, Queen, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed, Steely Dan, James Taylor, and Ritchie Valens.

This year's ballots, with instructions to be sent back and postmarked no later than Oct. 12 in order to be counted, were sent to voting members of the Rock Hall with a CD with samples of each artist's work.

Established in 1983 by music industry leaders, one of the goals of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation is to recognize the contributions of those "who have had a significant impact over the evolution, development, and perpetuation of rock and roll." Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Individuals can also be recognized by the Hall Of Fame in the Non-Performer (Songwriters, Producers, Disc Jockeys, Record Executives, Journalists) and Early Influences (artists whose music predated but inspired rock music) categories.

The nominating committee is composed of approximately 1,000 music experts, who select from a list of nominees in the Performer category. Those who receive the highest number and more than 50% of the vote are inducted. It is the job of the nominating committee to elect the inductees in the Non-Performer and Early Influence categories.

Features on Black Sabbath, Earth, Wind & Fire, the O'Jays, and Bonnie Raitt are available on LAUNCH.com.
