(5/9/03, 3 p.m. ET) -- Wyclef Jean officially announced on Thursday (May 8) that he is joining J Records as a recording artist.
The Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and producer is already recording his first album for the label, which is expected to be released in the fall.
Prior to signing as an artist, Wyclef already had a working relationship with J Records and Clive Davis, the Chairman of the RCA music group. While Davis headed Arista Records, Jean produced Santana's Grammy-winning "Maria, Maria" and the title track to Whitney Houston's seven-times platinum album, My Love Is Your Love.
Davis said, "Wyclef is one of those rare cutting edge artists who define an era. He's a young triple threat who has just written some of the best contemporary songs I've heard in years. We've had worldwide hits together before. I can't wait to share many more with him."
Jean commented, "Clive Davis, man! He's the godfather of music. I hooked up with him so I could be a quadruple threat."
Jean rose to fame as a member of the groundbreaking group, the Fugees. He was previously signed to Sony Music's Columbia Records, but he now joins current J Records artists Annie Lennox, Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart, Luther Vandross, Busta Rhymes, Tyrese, and Monica among others.
The RCA Music Group, which includes both J Records and RCA, is a BMG-owned label group run by Davis. The RCA roster is home to Christina Aguilera, Foo Fighters, David Gray, Heather Headley, Kelly Clarkson, and more.
