(6/19/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- The Warped Tour kicks off Thursday (June 19) in Boise, Idaho, and the summer-long traveling festival features a wide variety of established acts such as A.F.I., Less Than Jake, and Pennywise. It also features a variety of newcomers, one of which is S.T.U.N., who will release its debut album, Evolution Of Energy, on June 24.
A.F.I. singer Davey Havoc and guitarist Jade Puget said that even though they're veterans, they're not exactly typical Warped Tour artists. "We've never considered ourselves Warped, really,” Havoc said. “I mean we've played the Warped Tour, but we really don't really think of ourselves as a Warped band."
Puget added, "A lot of different bands play Warped though. I mean, it's not like it's all Southern California skate rock. It's become pretty broad, you know? We might not exactly fit that, but I don't think we're, like, out of place there. I don't think it's like, 'What's A.F.I. doing on the Warped Tour? That's sooo weird.'"
S.T.U.N. are supporting their debut album, and it will be their first appearance on the traveling festival. So what do they expect? Guitarist/songwriter Neil Spies and vocalist Christiane Jay said they're just happy to be playing. "I don't have any expectations,” Spies said. “I live day by day. But I feel very good about it. I'm excited about it. And I'm excited to play for a lot of kids everyday. I'm excited to play a lot. We're on the whole Warped Tour, and it's going to be like almost every day." Jay interjected, "And they feed you, which is key."
The Warped Tour is on its ninth year, and this year's 40-plus date festival wraps up August 10 in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
