(6/23/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Santana's latest album, Shaman, is barely nine months old, but Carlos Santana is already working on his next recording project. He's making an album called Hymns with Santana band bassist Benny Rietveld, keyboardist Chester Thompson, and drummer Dennis Chambers, which he described to LAUNCH as an instrumental album.
"Basically instrumental hymns, just instrumental songs," Santana said. "Kind of like Eric Johnson or Steve Vai--not that I'm going in that direction, but more in the sense that it's instrumental."
Santana says the album is almost finished and could come out before the end of this year or in early 2004.
Santana says he also hopes to release a DVD of his 1988 performances with saxophonist Wayne Shorter in the near future.
Santana has just started a summer tour of North America. The band's next show is Tuesday (June 24) at the Tweeter Center at the Waterfront in Camden, New Jersey.
