(2/19/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Sean Paul's Dutty Rock album has been certified gold, a first for the dancehall reggae artist. "Gimme The Light," the album's first hit, drove the project up the charts in 2002, and "Get Busy," the latest single from the project, is doing the same. Dutty Rock had dipped to Number 94 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but it recently jumped almost 60 slots to re-enter the top 40. The album now sits at Number 36, making it one of the most successful dancehall reggae albums of all time.
Sean Paul's crossover success and good looks might give some the wrong impression about his Jamaican upbringing. However, the humble artist was glad to set the record straight while discussing how he was initially perceived. And while doing so, Paul shared a story that could serve as inspiration for anybody dealing with the imprisonment of a loved one.
"People did feel I was a rich, pretty boy breaking in," Sean Paul said, "but let me just say that when I was 13 my father went to prison. I had to be the man of the house. He went to prison for six years in Jamaica and, basically, I wasn't living a uptown, posh kind of chilling lifestyle. My mom worked very hard as an artist to provide food and to provide the best education that she could for us. "
