(6/11/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- 2 Fast 2 Furious director John Singleton raced his way into record books this past weekend. The sequel's 51 million dollar opening gave the Los Angeles filmmaker the biggest opening numbers ever for a black director. Keenan Ivory Wayans, who helmed Scary Movie, was the last person to hold the title with the comedy's $42 million debut.
Singleton's film credits include Boyz N The Hood, which earned him best director and best screenplay Oscar nominations, Higher Learning, and Baby Boy.
When asked about his career arc, Singleton said, "In the beginning of my career, all I wanted to do was be taken seriously as a filmmaker, so I chose to like, develop projects that would have some social relevance. I went to film school because I love movies. So I'm going to flip on everybody and just do some popcorn stuff--and that started with Shaft and then, you know now, this movie (2 Fast 2 Furious). I feel that I'm best serve my career by doing different types of movies."
2 Fast 2 Furious stars Paul Walker and Tyrese.
