Adam Ant Arrested In London

(6/13/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Adam Ant doesn't drink and doesn't smoke, so what does he do? He went berserk, threw rocks at his neighbors homes and windows, and then took his pants off at a neighborhood cafe before going downstairs to its basement to sleep--all during a single episode in London on Wednesday (June 12).

London police arrested Ant (Stuart Goddard) at the Curly Dog Cafe where he was found in the basement. He was booked on suspicion of criminal damage.

As is law in England, officials can't release the proper name of an arrested person until a guilty verdict is returned, but a Duty Officer for Scotland Yard said that they did make an arrest and that Ant would be returning to the police station in July.

"All we've said is that we confirm that a 49-year-old man was arrested in North London on suspicion of criminal damage, and it is minor damage, at property at St. Marks Crescent, Northwest London,” the Duty Officer said. “He's been belt returned to a police station in July."

Ironically, U.K. news publication The Sun reported that Ant initially refused to come out when cops found him curled up like a ball in the basement of the Curly Dog Cafe. He was also found without his pants, which he dropped upstairs before retiring to the basement. When asked about Ant's pants, and his lack thereof, the spokesperson added, "I'm not aware of that at all. If you know the background to the alleged person, there are mitigating circumstances, and I'm not aware that he's been questioned about that at all."

Those mitigating circumstances could be bouts with mental illness. In January 2002, Goddard participated in a pub brawl in which he threatened to pistol-whip the husband of one of his friends, Kerry Ryan, and brandished a firearm while threatening a crowd. Goddard had been ridiculed by patrons for his cowboy hat and combat jacket outfit. He later flung an automobile alternator through the pub's window, striking Greek musician Plato Contostavlos. Three psychiatrists who examined Goddard at the time described him as being in a "hyper-manic state." Judge Jeremy Roberts ruled that he was suffering from mental problems and should not be treated as a criminal, but as a man in need of help.

The judge ordered the former pop star to serve 12 months of community rehabilitation and pay 500 pounds ($780) in compensation to Contostavlos.
