(4/14/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Sixpence None The Richer's "Breathe Your Name" won the modern rock/alternative recorded song of the year honor at the 34th annual Dove Awards at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville on Thursday (April 10). The Dove Awards honor achievement in all genres of contemporary Christian and gospel music. "Breathe Your Name" was the first single to be released from the band's latest album, Divine Discontent, and it was written by Sixpence guitarist and resident songwriter Matt Slocum.
Sixpence vocalist Leigh Nash said that she always enjoys using her voice to bring Slocum's music and lyrics to life. "That's part of the chemistry that we share," Nash said. "It's easy for me to interpret his songs, and I think it comes across really well. Obviously we've touched a lot of people."
Sixpence was on-hand to accept the award, and the group also performed at the ceremony.
Nichole Nordeman and Michael W. Smith were the big winners of the evening. Nordeman earned a total of seven Dove Awards, including female vocalist of the year and songwriter of the year. Smith won six Dove Awards, including artist of the year for the second straight year, as well as his first award for male vocalist of the year.
The Dove Awards will air as a two-hour show on Pax-TV on Saturday (April 19).
