(6/18/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Deftones are set to play Metallica's Summer Sanitarium Tour starting July 4 in Pontiac, Michigan in support of their new self-titled album. Bass Player Chi Cheng said that the band feels like it can take on a challenge like opening up for Metallica and playing with more commercially successful bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, who are also on the tour.
"I know I'm definitely a Metallica fan, and so it's a band we've never toured with," Cheng said. "It's like, 'Well, sh-t.' I mean, I think that now that we've proven ourselves for so many years and for so long that we can feel comfortable doing a bill like this which normally we would always turn down."
Cheng added that the band feels that they won't become part of a scene just because they're playing with the likes of Metallica or some of the other bands on the bill. "We're always notorious for turning anything remotely associated with a scene down and I think that we feel comfortable right now doing anything we want as long as our sh-t is airtight, you know what I mean?" Cheng said. "And the chance to play with Metallica is pretty f--kin' cool."
In addition to Deftones, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and headliners Metallica, Summer Sanitarium features nu-metal outfit Mudvayne.
Deftones' first single from its eponymous album is "Minerva," which is currently at Number 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart.
