Deep Purple Bassist Speaks Out On Rhode Island Club Fire

02/25/2003 12:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Bruce Simon

(2/25/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Roger Glover said he's not all that surprised about the Rhode Island club fire that killed 97 people at a Great White show last week. It's not that the Deep Purple bassist doesn't care about the victims--quite the contrary--but he said that he's almost seen this type of thing happen before.

"I've been in clubs where that could easily have happened, what happened the other night," Glover said. "I'm not gonna comment on that particular fire, because obviously it's very, very tragic, and there are all kinds of finger-pointing and blame going on that is all out of proportion. It's only there because so many people died. They were only interested in just, you know, having a good time--that's the sad part of it. And I certainly think that, you know, laws and bylaws, and fire drills and stuff like that should be enforced, because bands are just as much in danger as people, you know? You're all in the same boat together."

Of course, Deep Purple has its own infamous fire in the band's history. Just before recording sessions began for the Machine Head album in Montreux, Switzerland, the members of Deep Purple attended a show by Frank Zappa & the Mothers Of Invention at the Montreux Casino. Someone in the audience shot off a flare gun inside the building, which was quickly engulfed in flames. In Deep Purple's case, Glover recalled that no one died, and the most serious injuries were cuts from broken glass and one broken collarbone.
