(4/2/01, 3 p.m. ET) - Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney will be paying property taxes in California soon. McCartney has paid $4 million for a 4,700-square foot, French country-style gated house on a two-acre parcel in the Hollywood Hills. The house has a glittery lineage--McCartney bought it from Hole's Courtney Love, who purchased it in 1997 from actress Ellen DeGeneres. McCartney had been leasing the house from Love, who bought a $2.8 million loft in New York City and a slightly smaller home in Los Angeles. Among McCartney's other real estate holdings are a farm in Scotland and a ranch in Tucson, Arizona.
In other news across the globe, Deep Purple raised a ruckus in India on Sunday night (April 1), playing a benefit for victims of the January 26 earthquake in the western province of Gujarat. The show, attended by a crowd of more than 30,000, was Purple's first appearance in India since 1995, and its first in the country without founding guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.
Reviews for the show were overwhelmingly positive, with The Asian Age newspaper declaring "they came, they sang, they conquered," while The New Indian Express raved in a headline, "the Gods descended, blessed swooning Bangaloreans."
The group, however, wasn't buying into the hype. As keyboardist Jon Lord told reporters in India, "We're just five guys with feet of clay. We enjoy performing and we love each other. We're people, not gods."
