Sugar Ray, Tonic, And R.E.M. Share Thanksgiving

11/25/1999 7:00 AM, Yahoo! Music
Craig Rosen

(11/25/99, 7 a.m. ET) - Thanksgiving means different things for different people, even musicians. Sugar Ray's DJ Homicide loves the family aspect of Thanksgiving, but he notes that people should be thankful every day.

"I have always had boring Thanksgivings my whole life. I don't look forward to them. I'm not being a bitter guy, but Thanksgiving, I don't really dig it," he tells LAUNCH. "It's cool to get around the family to eat. I love that part. I love seeing my family, there's no doubt, but it's never something I look forward to as far as a holiday, you know?"

Tonic singer Emerson Hart says what comes to mind at Thanksgiving is nuts--specifically, circus nuts, and he tells LAUNCH it's not a very fond memory. "My mother left it out, I think. It was Thanksgiving. She left out a jar of circus peanuts. I ate it and I proceeded to vomit, for probably hours on end, of hunter-safety-orange peanuts pouring out of my gullet. I'll never eat another circus peanut again."

R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck's recollection of a Thanksgiving spent overseas might give some indication as to why the band is now hesitant to hit the road for long periods of time. "I remember, particularly, playing in France on Thanksgiving," Buck told LAUNCH. "So they thought they would be really nice to us and cook us Thanksgiving dinner, and it was like this fried processed turkey roll and fried pumpkin, because they knew it was something was with pumpkins for Thanksgiving. And they were really sweet, and I was, like, 'What's that?' and the lady goes, 'Well, they cook him and eat him at Thanksgiving.' And I was, like, 'Hmmm.' We were eating it and we didn't know what it was, and someone goes, 'It's fried pumpkin. They fried the pumpkin shell.'"
