Guess Who, Again?

(8/11/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - The Guess Who's recent reunion might not be a one-off after all. After playing a four-song, 20-minute set at the closing ceremonies of the Pan American Games in their native Winnipeg, Manitoba, the four original members--Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Jim Kale, and Garry Peterson--told local media that they're contemplating a tour.

The timing for the reunion couldn't be better, as a whole new generation of fans has discovered the Guess Who's music, thanks to Lenny Kravitz's hit cover of the band's 1970 No. 1 hit "American Woman."

"I've got a very strange feeling that it won't be the last time we play together," Cummings told the Winnipeg Sun. "I really think this is going to go on further. There are some offers on the table, especially from the States and Japan, and why not?...If you're middle-aged and you can still have fun, that's the deal."

Cummings said he envisioned a show that would include Guess Who material plus songs from his solo career and from Bachman-Turner Overdrive. His bandmates aren't as certain, however. The Sun said Bachman told a fan at Winnipeg International Airport that the Pan Am gig "was a magical moment for us," though he didn't reveal any future plans.

Peterson, meanwhile, said in a radio interview that the reported animosity between the four musicians is overblown. "All the stuff I read in the paper this morning, about 'getting them together for a tour is going to be like getting the Middle East together,' that is as far from the truth as it could possibly be," Peterson said. But Kale, who owns the Guess Who name, told the Sun it's "very premature" to confirm or deny reports of a tour. However, he did say, "It's more than just a rumor. There's a lot to be discussed."
