(12/30/97) - Confirming long-standing rumors, A&M recording artists the Gin Blossoms have announced they are splitting up.

The band's hometown paper, the Arizona Republic, confirmed the breakup late last week. Lead singer Robin Wilson will join drummer Philip Rhodes in a new band, the Pharaohs. Guitarists Jesse Valenzuela and Scott Johnson have formed the Low Watts. Bassist Bill Leen reportedly plans to open a bookstore.

The band's 1992 debut album, New Miserable Experience, sold two million copies on the strength of its top five single "Jealousy." The followup album, Congratulations, I'm Sorry, sold over one million units. A cut from that album, "As Long As It Matters," was nominated for a Grammy last year.

"We talked about a third record, but nobody was really into it," Johnson said. "You know, if not everybody is into it, it's not really fun."
