The Breeders Are Back

(12/15/00, 7 a.m. ET) - The Breeders returned with a surprise show Tuesday night (December 12) in Los Angeles at Mr. T's Bowl. The reunited band, featuring sisters Kim and Kelley Deal, played 11 songs including " Cannonball" and the new tunes " Too Alive" and " Fire In The Maid." It was the first show the band--which also includes drummer Jose Medeles, bassist Mando Lopez, and guitarist Richard Presley--has played together in nearly six years.

Among the problems leading to the band's breakup in the mid-'90s was Kelley's substance abuse, and while she was in rehab, she played her guitar and ended up doing some songwriting.

She told LAUNCH, "I went to the famed Hazelden Clinic--you want to write that down?--for treatment. My mom and dad did an intervention on me and sent me to treatment in April of '95. And whilst I was there I had taken my guitar with me. I just started putting chords together, developing chord progressions. I didn't know that was what I was doing at the time, but that's what I was doing. [I thought], Oh boy. That's pretty together. That's neat."

The Breeders will head into the studio to record a new album with producer Steve Albini early next year.
