Orgy's 'Fiction' Taps Into Japanese Phenomenon

(10/18/00, 7 a.m. ET) - Orgy might be best known for its cover of "Blue Monday," the New Wave-era classic by New Order they recorded for their 1998 debut album, Candyass. But it's possible that the Los Angeles band might soon earn some props for its own songwriting as well, based on the initial success of its new single, "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)," from the group's latest album, Vapor Transmission.

The song is currently on two Billboard charts (Modern Rock Tracks, Mainstream Rock Tracks) and perhaps will earn greater success now that Vapor Transmission is in stores.

Orgy frontman Jay Gordon says that the tune is about a phenomenon currently overtaking Japan regarding virtual characters--computer-generated personalities with a multi-media reach to rival some of America's biggest stars. "In Japan they're really hooked on this virtual star," he says. "It kinda freaks me out, you know what I mean? She's as big as, like, a Marilyn Monroe. There's several of them over there that are huge. We were doing our Japanese interviews the other day. They were just telling me crazy stories about guys killing themselves over these virtual stars. Oh God, it's just ridiculous."

Vapor Transmission arrived in stores on October 10. Its next single will be "Opticon."
